5 WAYS TO STEP OUT OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY COMFORT ZONE

5 WAYS TO STEP OUT OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY COMFORT ZONE

Sometimes I'm amazed at how prone we are to stay in our comfort zone. There are somethings that challenge me and force me out of my comfort zone, which I try to take in stride and I try to be open to. There are other things that force me out of my comfort zone and it makes me want to hide in a corner, ha!

I go through different seasons within my photography journey. Seasons when I'm ready and willing for new challenges and seasons where I would rather stay still. Either way it's always good to be willing to step outside of our comfort zone, right?

JOIN A PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP

I think photography groups are so great. When I first started my photography journey I joined a photography group and it was tough, it definitely forced me outside of my comfort zone. One thing that I really love is that if you're not ready to join a photography group, you can create your own. There has been lots of talk about mastermind groups around the interwebs and I totally love the idea. You could start your own photography mastermind group with others photographers.

DO A PHOTO CHALLENGE

Guys, photo challenges always seem to force me out of my comfort zone because they force me to be more intentional about what I'm photographing, which can be really hard for me sometimes. But the great thing about photo challenges is that they can really be a catalyst for growth. One of my favorite types of photo challenges is the "photo a day" challenge. It forces us to take out our camera everyday and if helps us to capture something from our everyday.

TRY A NEW TECHNIQUE OR STYLE

Just recently I purchased some new filters for my lenses. I have never worked with filters before and while slapping a filter on my lens isn't too crazy, it has taken me a while to actually give it a try. It's a little out of my comfort zone simply because it's new for me. I've also recently decided to start using my speedlight again and it was definitely out of my comfort because It had been so long since I last used it, I wondered if I would remember how. Trying new gear can definitely force us out of our comfort zone and so can trying new styles too. I've been really into flaylay photography and I had to get out of my comfort zone to learn new ways to shoot.

TRAVEL SOMEWHERE NEW

Going new places can not only spark our creativity, but it can also challenge us too. New places don't have to be far away or extravagant. New places can be a new coffee shop or a new place to hike. Traveling somewhere new will challenge us to see something different, to view it through our camera and move us out of our comfort zone.

TAKE YOUR CAMERA WITH YOU

Fan fact, I strongly dislike drawing any kind of attention to myself. If only I could be invisible. ;) Taking my camera with me regardless of where I'm going get's me out of my comfort zone. No matter how many sessions I've been on, no matter how many times I've been to a certain place, pulling out my camera in public places makes me uncomfortable. Now, being a photographer and running a lifestyle blog means one has to do those things, but it doesn't make me any less uncomfortable, ha!
